...RealPlayer is even worse, it loads several drivers into memory despite not being used (the reason is it saves a few milliseconds on start up of application at the expense of memory).

For a free mp3-player that uses little resources, there a ton out there (smallest I seen is 150kb).

I always have music on when I play guildwars... I just have windows media playing in the backgroud(minimized) Just turn off all visualizations, never seems to slow my game down at all.
